Gluten Free Fish Recipes: Easy Gluten-Free Meals

Spread the love

When on a gluten free diet, it is important to know what you can eat. In this post I'll show you delicious and easy gluten free fish recipes.

Gluten Free Fish Recipes: Easy Gluten-Free Meals

I always have frozen fish fillets in my freezer. More often than not it is flounder, salmon, and cod. I love a good seafood casserole or a gluten free fried fish, but, when you are new to a gluten free lifestyle and diet, it can be hard to know what you can have that is safe for you (and is also delicious). I'm going to go over some tips and tricks in this post as well as share some of my favorite gluten free fish recipes and gluten free seafood recipes!

🐠 What fishes are safe?

All fish in its natural form is gluten-free fish. Gluten is a protein found in things such as barley, wheat, rye, and malt. For the average home cook, you are going to want to go with a flaky white fish (such as cod or halibut) or salmon (sockeye salmon being my personal favorite). This doesn't mean that you can't splurge every now and then and get something like chilean sea bass or rockfish. But, whatever you favorite fish is, in its natural form, it is gluten free!

⭐️Tips and Tricks for making gluten free fish recipes:

I always have a gluten free all purpose flour on hand in my house if I want to give my fish recipes a little crisp. The flour that I love to use for this is King Arthur Gluten Free Measure for Measure flour.

If you are going to fry fish it is important to remember the following about oils:

Cooking oils and frying oils all have different heating points. This means that some oils are going to burn faster than others.

If you are wanting to sear a fish in a frying pan for a recipe, then it is safe to use something like olive oil or avocado oil. However, if you are wanting deep-fried fish (a la fish and chips along with mushy peas) then you would use either vegetable oil or canola oil as your cooking oil. These types of oils are meant for deep frying. It would be the same type of oil if you were to make homemade fries or homemade chips.

Some people also like to make their fish in an air fryer, even though I must say that I have never done this.

🥣 Kitchen Tools you may want:

I like to always have a large skillet, preferably one that is cast iron so that it can be used for the stove top as well as the oven.

Another great option is a solid and sturdy baking sheet. That way you can use it to just bake the fish itself or you can do a pan meal where you throw everything on there and ensure that it cooks evenly.

⍰ Do I need to use "fresh fish" for gluten free fish?

The idea of fresh fish being fish that is not frozen from the grocery store is incorrect. All fish is frozen. Meaning that the fish was caught then frozen immediately. The "fresh" fish you get from the store is fish that has already been thawed. I therefore always suggest that people keep frozen fillets in their freezer. It is a great way to guarantee that you will always have fresh fish when you want it and you can then decide when to thaw it and not be on the clock.

📃Key Ingredients to have on hand for fish:

I am always pro spice in my house. I always have black pepper, salt, garlic powder, harissa, zaatar, oregano, and a slurry of other spices ready to go at a moments notice. Spice is the key with fish, along with whatever sauce or glaze you will top it with. But, it all starts with spice. Old bay seasoning is a big one in Maryland where I live. I also like to have garlic cloves, lemon juice, white wine, and sherry.  Another big staple is tartar sauce.3

Frozen Fish filets:

As I said above, I love cooking with cod filets (I have several family friendly cod recipes listed below) as well as salmon. For cod you get can different variations like Alaskan cod fillets, regular cod, or black cod. In addition to salmon you can also find fish like mahi mahi.
